'Why We Worship

As human beings, there is always a longing to admire something or someone. This is a natural feeling or drive that has been inputted into us through the foundations of the earth.

Every man worships something and/or someone. It is solely your choice what/who you choose to set your heart, affections and thoughts on to worship.

In one way or the other, we all “worship” (and I use the term here carefully) someone and/or something. When you critically think about it, whatever you put a lot of your time, effort, energy, resources, heart, attention, desires, longing and emotions into, stands a chance of being an object (or as we would call it) or an idol of your heart and worship.

Sometimes, this can be a material thing... your car, your house, your clothes, your bags, your make up collection, your bank balance etc. Sometimes, this could also be a person... your spouse, a mentor, your pastor or priest, someone you look up to, your kids, your partner...

The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being. (Matthew 6:21...The MSG)
You think about it, anything or anyone that you find it very hard to let go off, when it comes to choosing between that thing or person and making God “happy”, could well possibly be the object of your worship! Your mini idol!
I'm sure you've heard people say I love my car, I love my house, I love my dad, I love God... Realistically, we don’t “love” inanimate things, we “like” them, and then love people. When we start loving inanimate things, there is the tendency for them to get much of our devotion and end up being an idol.
This is not to say that we should not care about these things mentioned above. No!. We should care about them but they should not be the first and foremost concern on our minds and hearts.
For we were created for one purpose, first and foremost:
“To bring God good pleasure, glory... and in today’s language, simply to make God happy!”
Revelations 4:11 puts it this way: Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

So the question is not just why we worship, but also “Who” we worship.

One of the things I have found out that helps me put the necessity of worship into reality for me is when I take time out to think. Man has the ability to think, some use this ability, and others don’t. When one takes the time to think about life, there would be a point where you come across God, His nature and His actions.

With regards to His nature, you find every reason you need to be sold out to Him, to love Him, to adore Him and even give your all to Him, simply for the mere fact that He loves you regardless of who you are and what you’ve done.

You and I will forever be indebted to God for His grace, love and mercy. This is because of His loving and merciful nature, He decided to send His only Son to redeem and save us from a life of sin and death and shame. When you think about the price He paid for you and I, even if He doesn’t do anything for us anymore, that on its own, makes Him to be worthy of our worship. He did all of that because He is a good, loving, caring and kind a God.

With regards to His doings and actions, when you take out time whether actively or passively to reflect on God’s majesty, splendor and His handiwork, a thoughtful heart will be in complete, total awe and amazement of how intricately detailed God is.

Look at the human body system, look at the animals we know, whether wild or domestic, look at the landscapes, the skies, the mountains, the seas, the “wonders of the earth”.... When you think and ponder over these things, it will genuinely cause you to have an unequal, unparalleled admiration for God and what He does.

When all of these is in place, one begins to live a life that is God-conscious on a daily basis. Being God conscious will in turn, help you put God where He deserves to be in your heart, life, decisions, choices, agenda, plans etc. And the good thing is that when one lives a lifestyle like this, God first and foremost is glorified and magnified and ends up being happy with that person. That’s where your worship starts.

And for the person, the person begins to develop a God-like Christ-like character. We become like unto those we admire and worship. When we worship God we tend to value what God values and gradually take on the characteristics and qualities of God, but never to His level. As Philippians 2:5 says, "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ." How do we take on the mind of Christ? In Romans 12:2 we read, "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

Our minds become renewed daily and transformed into what God requires of it to be. Obedience to God and His ways become less burdensome, because when you love someone, you will love to make them happy, love what they love, hate what they hate.
When we worship God we develop such traits as forgiveness, tenderness, justice, righteousness, purity, kindness, and love.

Then you see worship, not just as an act, but as a lifestyle. Worship becomes to you, the total unconditional and unreserved devotion and dedication of your whole being (spirit, soul and body) to God.

It becomes the unqualified and unrestrained surrender of your relationships, time, talents and treasures to the glorification and service of God, through Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit - in response to His mercy, love and grace.

  1. Interesting! Worship for me is my lifestyle. We tend to place so many things above our worship. Even social media as taken our time. I could go on. Well said light child.
